Box Turtles Take to the Roads

08/27/2008

The recent rains have sent our local Box Turtles onto the roads.

Please, drive extra carefully everywhere but especially in and around the Zoo so that we can protect them.

During the past two weeks, two of our local Box Turtles have been run over.

Please, watch the road for dark objects. If you see one, stop if you can safely do so. Put on your flashing lights, and let the turtle pass. Better yet, if you can safely leave your car, get out, pick up the turtle and -- when it is safe to do so-- take it to the side of the road in the direction that it is traveling. Never turn it around. It knows where it wants to go.

Remember to drive slowly in and around the Zoo. You and your passengers will be safer for it -- and so will the local wildlife.
