08/06/2009
Curator of Horticulture Virginia (Gin) Wall, received the first Lifetime Award (The Chuck Rogers Conservation Award) given by the Association of Zoological Horticulture. The award recognizes Ms. Wall's persistence in promoting the valuable role horticulture plays, and should play, in zoological institutions.
Over the years, Ms. Wall has advocated for plant conservation programs and has involved Zoo staff in cultivating, propagating, researching and protecting a variety of rare and endangered species of plants. Ms. Wall has also actively led several plant conservation programs inside Africa. A quote from the Horticulture Association’s citation reads: “It is fitting that this award goes to Gin for her dedication, perseverance and commitment to the conservation of our planet.” The N.C. Zoo Society congratulates Ms. Wall and thanks her for her multiple accomplishments for the N.C. Zoo and for global conservation.
A second lifetime achievement award went to Lucy Segerson, who recently retired from the Zoo. Ms. Sergerson began her career at the N.C. Zoo as an animal keeper and later became the Registrar for the Zoo's Animal Division. The American Association of Zoo Keepers honored her work with its Lifetime Award for outstanding service to the profession and to the Association.
Her citation reads: “This award is based on Ms. Segerson’s outstanding commitment to professionalism in her distinguished career as a zookeeper and her service to AAZK on a chapter and national level.” The N.C. Zoo Society congratulates Ms. Segerson and thanks her for her multiple accomplishments for the N.C. Zoo and for wildlife.
