New Gorilla arrives at the Zoo

01/17/2010
gorillafemaleJamani, a 10-year-old female gorilla, arrived at the North Carolina Zoo from the San Diego Zoo.

Jamani is the first of two female gorillas that the Gorilla Species Survival Plan deceided to transfer to the N.C. Zoo in 2010. The Species Survival Plan is a cooperative program operated by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums to oversee the captive care and breeding of these highly endangered Great Apes. Acacia, a 15-year-old female from the Oklahoma City Zoo will arrive in early February.

Jamani traveled by cargo jet and set down at the Piedmont Triad International Airport around 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 13. She then traveled by truck to Asheboro, where Zoo keepers helped her settle into quarantine facilities at the N.C. Zoo’s Hanes Veterinary Medical Center. All animals coming into the Zoo must  go through a lengthy quarantine period to ensure that they are healthy before they come in contact with other animals at the Zoo.

The N.C. Zoo lost three female gorillas to medical problems during 2009. Two of them died from cancer in late December.  Jamani's and Acacia's transfers were arranged before these deaths and are not related to the loss of the other two animals. The two new females will eventually join 18-year-old male Nkosi in the Zoo’s outdoor Forest Glade gorilla habitat.
