Thank you, again, for your support of the reconstruction of the Kabul
Zoo and the care of the zoo's animals. An update follows on the Funds'
financial information, reconstruction progress and other items that
might be of interest to you concerning Kabul, Afghanistan.
Financial Update (May 7, 2004):
Kabul Zoo Fund donations: $417,240
Kabul Zoo Fund spent: $215, 559

Mohammed Ashraf, who translated the content of the following text, has
worked for the Mayhew Animal Home (our logistics partners in Kabul) for
some years and acts as its agent there. He has overseen all the
construction work at the Kabul Zoo. Mr. Ashraf made contact with the
new head of the culture department, Mr. Akbary. Akbary confirmed that
he is pleased with the progress at the zoo and requested additional
training for Mr. Shanoori, the Kabul Zoo's newly promoted Zoo Director,
and his staff. The information below came from a report that Mr. Ashraf
originally received from Mr. Shanoori.
Mr. Shanoori began his report by saying, "At the start I want to say
thank you for your collaboration with the Kabul Zoo." Director Shanoori
then went on to list the work that had taken place over the last month,
which was also his first month as the new Kabul Zoo Director.
Maintenance and Keeper Activities:
- Planting of 100 trees in different parts of the zoo.
- Irrigation of green field and trees (because there is no enough raining yet)
- Cleaning of all cages every day
- Evacuation of local bears twice in month and providing animals with with fresh water.
- Routine distribution of food supply, which is supported by Kabul Municipality (no serious problem in this regards).
- No health problem reported in zoo animals in the last 30 days.

Accepted donations of a couple of pick cook (male and female) from
Central Security Office Animal reproduction: Chinese pigs: 2 babies;
Wolf: 2 babies
New activities by Engineer Hakim:
- Completion of monkey island
- Five benches (made of concrete) installed in park area.
- Installation of steel in deer window ( as planned)
- Repaired hole in wall between wolf cage and next cage ( used by eagle )
Finance and Attendance Report:
Income of zoo in last month: 197790 Afs ( 1 US dollar = 50.5 Afs). 350
students and kids from schools and kindergarten have visited the zoo.
