American Zoo and Aquarim Association Renews Accreditation for N.C. Zoo10/17/2005
The
zoo received official notice of the decision Thursday from the American
Zoo & Aquarium Association (AZA), headquartered in Silver Spring,
MD. Founded in 1924, AZA currently represents 211 accredited zoos
and aquariums, most located in North America.
Each AZA member institution must undergo rigorous investigation every five years in order to maintain accreditation. The process includes an application and a three-day on-site visit by a three-member accreditation team that reviews the institution’s standards for animal care, horticultural collections, veterinary programs, conservation, education, marketing, financial stability and safety. The accreditation team prepares a written report that is reviewed by the AZA Accreditation Commission. Later, AZA holds a hearing with an applying institution's top officals. The hearings take place during AZA's annual conventions. The written report on the N.C. Zoo describe it as “…a magnificent property with an enormous investment in high-quality exhibits…” The report also commended the zoo for demonstrating “extraordinary effectiveness and leadership as a conservation and education institution at the local, national and international levels…..” citing the park’s Project U.N.I.T.E. educational exchange program involving schools and teachers in North Carolina and Uganda as one of many examples. However, the report also notes that the N.C. Zoo faces major challenges in obtaining funds to refurbish and maintain its exhibits and other facilities in the face of an ongoing state budget crisis. > |
