Zoo Wins Sustainability Award11/14/2005
The North Carolina Zoo joined four other
state institutions and businesses receiving the 4th annual
Sustainability Awards presented by Sustainable North Carolina, a
nonprofit organization that promotes business practices that balance the needs of North
Carolina’s economic, community and natural
systems.
More than 300 business leaders, government officials, military personnel and sustainability advocates gathered to honor the winners last Wednesday at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. During the ceremonies, the N.C. Zoo received the Global Sustainability award in recognition for the Zoo's efforts to integrate sustainable practices throughout all levels of its operations. In a press release on the awards, Sustainable North Carolina lauded the Zoo for its “well-coordinated effort to integrate sustainability into every facet of operations on site as well as into its programs at the local, regional, state, national and international levels.” The Zoo sustainability practices include composting; integrated pest management; water conservation; the use of organic fertilizers, solar energy, biodiesel fuel and hybrid vehicles and the construction of an onsite wetland. The N.C. Zoo is the only zoo in the U.S. to have earn ISO 14001 EMS certification for its green practices. In addition, the Zoo actively promotes biodiversity and sustainability through educational programs that resonate through North Carolina and the world. Other organizations recognized with awards included: The U.S. Naval Air Depot at Cherry Point for Pollution Prevention; the Shaw Contract Group for Product Stewardship; the Piedmont Biofuels for Clean Technology; and the SJF Ventures/SJF Advisory Services for Innovative Initiatives. Sustainable North Carolina is a nonprofit that helps organizations accelerate their adoption of sustainable business practices by offering positive solutions-oriented approaches to changes. |
