Shadow a Veterinarian for Two

This program takes two people behind the scenes with the Zoo's Senior Veterinarian Dr. Ryan DeVoe as he visits and treats his patients on his daily rounds. Tour dates are set after participants suggest two or three dates that suit their schedules, and Dr. Ryan selects one of these days for the tour. Tours may be scheduled for any day of the week, including Saturdays or Sundays.

Tours begin at 8:45 a.m. when participants are escorted to the Zoo's Fredrick Moyer Hanes Veterinary Center. From there, participants travel with Dr. DeVoe throughout the morning as he takes care of his patients. Every tour is unique because the itinerary is determined by Dr. DeVoe's patient load. Rounds usually end between noon and 1:30 p.m., at which time participants are invited to a simple picnic lunch with Dr. DeVoe and a few staff members. After lunch, tour participants can take a golf cart tour of the Zoo if their schedule allows it.

Only one Shadow a Veterinarian Tour for Two is offered each month. The cost of the tour is a $500* donation. This fee covers both participants.

* The estimate value of goods and services provide with the tour is $22.50. Depending on individual circumstances, all or part of the remaining cost may be used as a tax-deduction to the NC Zoological Society, the 501(c)3 organization that raises funds and engenders public support for the North Carolina Zoo's programs supporting conservation, environmental education, animal enrichment and well being, wildlife research and outdoor recreation.
