Horticulture Tours

The NC Zoo Society offers a selection of tours featuring the Zoo's horticultural facilities. These tours are given on a "as-requested" basis, and can be delivered to groups as large as 11-15 people (please see Tour Cost sections below for information regarding maximum group sizes).

Backstage at the Greenhouses

On this tour, staff gathers our guests into the Zoo’s Greenhouse complex to talk with the horticulture professionals who care for the plants sheltered in these conservatories. Tour goers also visit a browse garden, where horticulture staff harvests special treats for Zoo herbivores, as well as a greenhouse that specializes in growing plants to please gorilla palates. The tour concludes at the Zoo’s compost site, where an annual harvest of “zoopoo” provides $1 million worth of soil conditioner to enrich the Zoo’s landscapes.

Tour Cost Cost is $300 for groups containing 1-6 people. Up to nine additional guests may be added to this group at a cost of $40 each. Child and adult tickets are sold for the same price. Tour pricing does not include entry to the Zoo.
Tax Information All, or nearly all, of the cost for this tour is tax-deductible as a donation to the NC Zoological Society, the private, 501(c)3 that supports the North Carolina Zoo. For tax purposes, receipts can be issued individually to each person attending the tour, or a single receipt can be issued to the group as a whole.
Notes
  • Children must be at least 12 years-old to attend; a paying adult must accompany any child under 17 years of age.
  • This tour takes place outside of the Zoo's public areas.
