Veterinary Experiences

Beginning in 2020, we will offer three ways to meet with the Zoo's chief veterinarian to see how the North Caroline Zoo provides for the veterinary health of its animals. All three programs are offered from March through October.

Shadow a Veterinarian For Two

Shadow a Veterinarian for Two experiences are available weekends only from March 1 - October 31. Participants spend four hours with the Zoo's top veterinarian and director of Animal Health Dr. Jb Minter as he makes rounds behind-the-scenes at the North Carolina Zoo.

After rounds, participants return to the vet hospital to enjoy a pizza lunch while chatting with the veterinary staff. An optional golf cart tour is available after lunch.

This tour is recommended for adults 16 years old or older. Special arrangements can be made for an adult to accompany a child seven years old or older on this tour.

The program cost of $575 for Zoo Society members and $595 for non-members provides Zoo admission, lunch, and the experience for two people and a $500 tax-deductible donation to the North Carolina Zoological Society, the private 501(c)3 non-profit that raises funds for the North Carolina Zoo.

Proceeds will support the needs of the Zoo's veterinary hospital.

We work with participants to set a tour date acceptable to them and to Dr. Minter.

Shadow a Veterinarian for a Day

Available on weekdays only, this 7-hour experience is limited to one participant, who will accompany Dr. Minter as he navigates through a "typical" day as a zoo veterinarian. Participants must be 16 years old or older.

This program is suited for individuals who have a deep interest in zoo veterinary medicine. Lunch is included.

We offer one Shadow a Veterinarian for a Day experience a month between March 1 and October 31.  This program must be scheduled during the regular workweek (Monday through Friday) on a date that is acceptable to the veterinarian and to the tour-goer.

The program cost of $575 for Zoo Society members and $595 for non-members provides Zoo admission, a full day experience with the Zoo Veterinarian, lunch, and a $500 tax-deductible donation to the North Carolina Zoological Society, the private 501(c)3 non-profit that raises funds for the North Carolina Zoo.

Proceeds will support the needs of the Zoo's veterinary hospital.

Lunch With a Zoo Veterinarian

Limited to two participants, this experience pairs tour goers with the Zoo's lead veterinarian to chat over lunch and then enjoy a tour of the Zoo's Hanes Veterinary Hospital and the Valerie H. Schindler Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

This program is available only to adults 16 years old or older and must be scheduled during the regular workweek.

We offer one Lunch with a Zoo Veterinarian experience per month from March 1 and October 31. This program must be scheduled Monday through Friday on a date that is acceptable to the veterinarian and to the tour goer.

The program cost of $350 for Zoo Society members and $375 for non-members provides Zoo admission, lunch, and the experience for two people and a $300 tax-deductible donation to the North Carolina Zoological Society, the private 501(c)3 non-profit that raises funds for the North Carolina Zoo.

Proceeds will support the needs of the Zoo's veterinary hospital.
